For the past 3 years, Dr. Richards has made the short walk from his apartment to his favorite park bench if the weather permits. He recently found and adopted a stray puppy that he name Rodeo that he brought with him at each visit. We are not sure why he named the dog 'Rodeo' but it did seem to fit his nature. After he retired from his practice and he could no longer take care of his wife Margaret, he found reading stories brought him some purpose. He may not be able to fix a bad tooth, but he could help the youngest to the oldest feel the spirit of a good book.
Dr. Richards would always draw a crowd of children and even adults, who would patiently listen to the next page unfold. He seems to have the natural gift to communicate the intent of the author so their bold visions could be revealed.
As I walk by the park and see Dr. Richards pointing and sharing a new adventure to those who wanted to listen, my soul feels good that reading a simple good story is not forgotten. This special person, who has seen and probably done it all, takes the time to share to those who need it most. I then began to reflect on my own life and ponder the notion of 'Where would I be without my imagination and dreams that a good story from some forgotten writer helps to foster'.
