Some of the strongest people in our lives never ask for attention.

My grandpa was one of them. He worked the land through years that tested his faith and strength. The Depression shaped him, but it never hardened his heart. He believed that you show up, you work hard, and you help others when they need it. He did not preach those values. He lived them every single day.

When I painted him, I wanted to capture that steady presence. He stands in his overalls and worn hat, grounded and certain. The lines on his face reflect early mornings and long harvest seasons. His hands, shaped by years of labor, gently hold a young plant with its roots still exposed.

That small plant carries deep meaning. It represents growth, responsibility, and the values passed from one generation to the next. Roots matter; what we nurture matters.

His eyes meet yours with quiet assurance, as if reminding you to hold onto what truly counts. The dark background allows the green of the plant to stand out, symbolizing life and hope even in difficult seasons.

This piece is a tribute to resilience, humility, and legacy.
